Feed More or More Often

I would like to get your opinion on feeding. Do you find it better to feed young snakes 2 or 3 pinkies at once or is it better to feed them 1 pinkie twice a week.

I have just got 2 great 03' corns that have been on a "maintenance" schedule of a pinkie a week. I would like to start getting some size on them. They are great feeders and I want to move them up to two pinkies a week just don't know which is the better method. When I was breeding corn snakes years ago I would feed multiple food items once a week. But the breeder I got my snakes from suggested feeding them twice a week.

Thanks,
Jeff C.

I'm sure everyone has a method they prefer, but when I'm raising hatchling colubrids I feed one appropriately sized prey item every 3-4 days.
Once they get some size on them, I may feed one pink then four days later feed two.
I also skip a feeding every two or three weeks just to clean them out.

I tend to think digestion is more complete and effecient this way than feeding two pinks at once every 7 days.

Like Clay said, everyone has their own preferences....I really like to be hands on with young snakes, so i like to feed once a week...Of course it's easier to do when you only have a few babies per year vs hundreds ( or thousands!!!)...Find what works for you; corns are pretty "forgiving" and just about the best snake around to "experiment" with...Peace

I used to breed a few corns. When I fed my hatchlings 2 pinkies per feeding, I found they were more likely to upchuck. When I switched over to feeding twice per week of one pinky at each feeding things worked out much better and none of the snakes regurgitated meals because of being overstuffed.

Of course your snakes are not neonates, and therefor they may be able to better hold down a larger meal at each feeding. I do think though that there is less of a chance of regurgitation problems if you feed a smaller meal to them every 3 or 4 days, or even every 5 days.

Best regards,
Glenn B
