WC Guyana Yellowtail

Any suggestions on starting a wildcaught yellowtail mail 3.5 feet. I have him setup in damp sphagnum moss with large water bowl and hide box.

I have tried him on frozen/thawed mice, frozen/thawed rats and rat pups.

I have tried live small rats but not mice to date.

Thought I might try the live mouse and live chick from the farm store and see if this kicks him in. He and the female are in good weight.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I haven't dealt with cribos in many years, but as I recall, freshly imported specimens were sometimes difficult to get feeding. They tended to be fairly prey specific at first, but once acclimated and feeding they would take pretty much anything. If the rodents aren't working, try chicks, fish, and frogs...feeder snakes are also an option, but I never had to resort to that. I found that movement was essential to entice a feeding response, so doing a dump and run with f/t items probably isnt feasible until they are feeding regularly. That isn't to say they won't take f/t, just that you have to figure out the combination of the right prey and the right dance to get their attention.
Good luck!

Frogs worked well on getting my baby blacktails going. However, you are dealing with a wildcaught adult apparently. As much as herpers hate to do so, snakes are one of their favorite meals. I have given reluctant feeders DOR rattlesnakes in the past. Also, I have a friend that gives his indigos all the baby corn snakes that he has trouble getting to feed. Once they start feeding, you shouldn't have a problem switching them over.
