Minimum height for DIY cage

I recently acwuired 3 balls from somone who had them to breed and didn't. They have been kept in sweater boxes (plastic tub type things with lids approx. 1 ft wide x 2 ft deep x at most 6 in high.) At my house animals are pets first then breeders next, so they are being built new homes. I am using a design I have used similarily for my beardies which uses yeilds a 4 ft wide x 2 ft tall x 2 ft deep cage. I was thinking of halving the height for the pythons. Would 1 ft high be enough? It is more than twice what they are used to now! I can either go half in the height or half the length of the cage and give them a 2x2x2 with climbing ability and a nice shelf to bask on. What do you guys think??

I personally would go 4x2x1. Adult Balls are more terrestrial and will appreciate the extra ground space.

A lot of it depends on the design of the cage, in particular if you'll be using a face frame and/or a substrate dam. Both will function to reduce the actual opening of the cage which can reduce viewing and making reaching the back for cleaning more difficult.

I don't keep BP's anymore but when I did liked to provide them with a somewhat deep substrate that they could burrow in slightly. As such a somewhat tall substrate dam is required. Let's say I build a 12" tall cage from 3/4" material. I would then lose 1.5" from height, leaving a 10.5" opening. If I used a 3" substrate dam I would only have a 7.5" opening, which I would not like. If I used a full face frame I would lost another 3/4" or so from top, meaning just over 6.5" of viewing area.

Just some food for thought as you decide.

The openings would include a 2" dam on them. I bought enough supplies to give them each a 4x2x2 but was just wondering if they would be ok with a 4x2x1 or 4x2x1ish. I kinda figured anything was better than the plastic they were in now....I guess I am just gonna go with the 4x2x2 and be done with it. I plan on sitting them on top of each other so it is going to wind up being a wall unit, but that's ok. All my snakes live in the formal living room and I have a wall they can take over.
