I am a very silent partner in a computer store in the twin cities. In the early 2000's, all of the big named laptop companies made hardware that was based solely on their machines. Gateway, Compaq, Dell and IBM (now Lenovo). These days it's still sort of the same thing, except hard drives, memory and other "non-essential) devices are able to be swapped between companies.
Dell is one of our top selling brands. The problem is ordering directly from the company is a nightmare. But on the plus side rarely do they come in for repairs. Sony's had a bad run for a few years with motherboard issues, which the company refuses to acknowledge, we usually keep them on hand just in case one comes back. Gateway are alright, but nothing special. IBM/Lenovo are a nightmare to deal with. Decent hard working machines, but an absolute nightmare to work on (like Volkswagen cars). As for Acer, they are the Walmart of laptops. We do more repairs on those then any other machine out there. They are built to last about 2 years, then all goes to hell.
If you have any questions or want any advice shoot me a message. I would be more then happy to help you. Newegg is a great site, but
www.tigerdirect.com has better deals usually.
