9/11 First Responders Banned from NYC 10th Year Ceremony

Quote:
The cops, firefighters and rescue workers who toiled at Ground Zero will not be invited to take part in the 10th anniversary ceremony, a city official told the Daily News Friday.

First responders will instead be asked back to the site at another day for a separate commemorative ceremony, city officials said.

That made me mad too. Why shouldn't they be allowed? Don't they think it brings back bad memories for the families too?

I think this thread is missing the reason why... I understand the upset, but it wasn't in disrespect.

The place is packed for the people who died and the lives loss in the process of saving lives. I personally would not have any qualms letting the families grieve over over the losses in order to recognize the hard work another day. I'll probably get ate up for that statement, but it is now as it was on the day of the incident... others before myself.

"There are hundreds of important people that have offered to participate over the last nine years," Evelyn Erskine, a mayoral spokeswoman told the Journal in response to religious leaders' outrage, "but the focus remains on the families of the thousands who died on Sept. 11."

Personally, those that survived and responded grieve no less than those that perished. No room for them at the ceremony may be bought by some but not I. I believe the same as those that stepped up to the plate, there is a reason but "no room" is bull.

And the first responders are PART of those thousands!! They lost brothers and sisters that day...and since, due to the contamination.

For God's sake!! Grow a SOUL, damn it!

Some people are just mean. I say LET them come! Let all those who put their lives on the line to help people they didn't even know come, they are just as important! And how many first responders lost their lives because they wanted to help? Their first responder friends should be allowed as well!

I'm not sure about how much space was alloted, but I sorta agree, more room could probably be found... I'm sure there will be several people there that don't fall into the 'family' category.

You're right. Didn't see it that way when I first read it, but you're right.
