Tegus in the pet trade come in 3 flavors Red tegu Tupinambis rufescens, Argentine black and white Tupinambis merianae and the dreaded Columbian tegu Tupinambis teguixin or nigropunctulatus or something I forget which. The Columbians are ones that are skittish and aggressive. The Argentine Red and Argentine black and white tegus are the ones that make good pets. of course any wild caught tegu that hasnt been handled or accustomed to people can be mean and viscious regardless of species. That is one of the main reasons I like to get babies and build them my self so i dont have to deal with others mistakes
As far as hibernating our red didnt really hibernate just of it got cold enough more like brumation. If a day was warm even during a cold spell it would come out. Locality of the tegus has a bearing on whether they hibernate or not.
