Question genetic testing??

Just a quick question, I know that some place (UC Davis for example) cam do genetic testing on horses to what genetic markers they marker for color and a couple of hereditary disorders. Can they do this in snakes?

Just idle curiosity.

It is feasible, but I honestly doubt there are many people if any that do that.

Snakes and reptiles are not as highly valued in society as horses, so the research has not been done (to my knowledge).

This topic was discussed more in-depth on another thread not too long ago.....while the thought has come up, I don't believe anyone is actively doing such. If I can find the thread, I'll give you a link.

Thanks for the replies, and that other thread is great too, thanks cat!! Srill processing alot of information. For me it would be more about knowing exactly what I am working with than trust in dealers.

just as an example, say the dealer/breeder knows that the snake is 100% het albino, but through testing it is discovered that the snake is also het for pied or something. Then I know what I am working with, does that makre any sense?

Heidi,

I agree, but most breeders wouldn't lie to you about that...

I know I wouldn't! (But there are people out there..... )

But you also need to keep in mind the extreme cost for that to be tested as well. Is it worth $5000 (figuratively) to find out if your het albino is really a het for albino plus something else?

Just a thought
