Housing Tegus Outside?

I am curious if anyone has housed or is housing their Tegus outside in PA/NJ/DE year round with success? Also what do you think about using one of the all fence dog runs to house them in?

how do you plan to keep their temps up in the winter?

That is what I was wondering, I know other people in different states have them outside year round and they burrow in the dirt/Ground during the winter to hibernate. I guess I was curious if they could take the cold winter temps we have in PA even if they were to hibernate.

I wouldn't let the temps for hibernation to go below 55 degrees, although b&w and reds can handle lower for a short time. It is best to move them to a controlled environment to hibernate in. I haven't the courage to leave mine outside year round and I live in South Carolina. Also you can modify a dog kennel to work just fine.

You'll have to ensure that they cannot dig out, that the fencing can contain them, without them getting wedged partway into any crevice or through the regular wire spacing. The temps in whatever burrows they have need to be checked, if it gets too cold, they could still die. Then you have to also worry about other animals getting to them, and people breaking in, or bothering them, and poisoned rodents from elsewhere getting in and them eating them.

I just had people break into my ourdoor pen recently. I had the gravid female stolen, retrieved the other female from down the street, and the male died a week later with no obvious reasons(I suspect poisoning).

Take all this into consideration before you put your tegu(s) outside.

If I lived in the south, I would used a modified dog kennel and provide some small hot shelters for winter time. You just have to ensure they have access to heat, food and water.
