Those can be found in northern Florida and some gulf states, I have the exact location, just have not collected any yet, bbbuuuuutttt this summer
An interesting spider as they use the flattened abdomen as a false bottem and to plug a side hole they might hide in from a predatory wasp or ants

Are they similar to trap door spiders (hole dwelling/ambush predators?) I will have to google them...

Last Summer was my first Summer in the States (I'm English) and we saw a tarantula walking across the road in Texas. I made my husband stop the truck, I had never seen a wild/native tarantula before (we have none in England)

We were looking at houses to buy last Summer and a lot of the vacant houses had praying mantis' over the exterior walls. I spent most of my house hunting time, hunting for unusual creatures (again, never saw a praying mantis in the wild before as we have none in England)

Yes Kerry they are in fact trap doors and I am glad you saw a 'T' here in the states.
So did ya get a house here and what state did you buy in ? I can help ya with what spiders you can find in whatever state.
Praying mantids are in every state here in the continental U.S. so you will see many depending on the season and state.

I did a Google search and the only place that I found selling them ( Cyclocosmia ricketti) was a place back in England but it dated back a few years. Good luck with your search for them, maybe this year is the year you'll catch one

No we never bought a house, we are still looking. There hasn't been the 'one' yet but I'm sure its out there. We are looking in Texas, I'm near Amarillo.

We saw the Tarantula on a country road outside of Fritch apparently it was mating season and he was traveling to find a mate. Very exciting to see one in its native environment. I have heard rumours that there are Black Widow spiders here but I am yet to come across any.

My husband is a Texan and he claims to have only seen one praying mantis in all his years here , I now find that hard to believe considering we must have seen at least a dozen last summer.
