Bureau of Missing Persons With the number of messages I have to move from someone trying to locate another, I guess this forum is needed. Please use it for that purpose.

So, is it just the mods that can see his visitor messages?

Maybe. The contact and visitor messages may have been disabled per his request. When that happened it may have made his statement invisible to others except us.

Makes since, I have visited his page several times trying to find out.

In my short time here, he was a pleasure to talk to and get advice from. Robert and I had several conversations and I never felt that he didn't want to help. He was (is) truly a great person to meet and interact with. Thanks Robert!

Lucille, thank you for bringing this up!

Yes, looking now I believe that is correct. The visitor message section on your profile can be turned off. When it was, his message stopped showing to the public.

Robert,

Lots of people leave herps and then return years later, I did that. If you happen to read this thread, you are always welcome back.

First off, let me say that quite likely none of you realize how much Robert just jumped in headfirst with his vigilance against scammers and spammers here. To be perfectly honest, the guy was downright scary with his enthusiasm and tenacity. He was a force to be feared by all bad guys. He didn't just burn the candle at both ends, he threw the whole candle into the fireplace. I did warn him about getting burned out, but no one could stop that fire but himself. That sort of effort took an obvious toll on his home life and probably his health as well. Unfortunately, it is not at all unusual for a moderator to burn themselves out trying to help everyone with everything all of the time. Which is why I am questioning whether I am really doing anyone any favors asking them to be a moderator in this meat grinder. I really hate losing people when they are trying to help and can't put the brakes on when it is needed for their own sanity. Heck, I don't know how many times I have had to walk away from this site or go into a "don't bother me" mode myself. Several times I have toyed with the idea of blocking my own IP address.

Anyway, one thing that Robert requested was that his access to his account on this site be blocked so that his natural instincts wouldn't bring him right back into the fire regardless of the damage it was doing to him. So that was done by one of the moderators to help protect Robert from himself. I do know he still does check in here on occasion as a guest.

That being said, I have gotten a couple of emails from Robert and he says things are improving a lot and his life is apparently on the mend. I really don't know if he'll ever be back, but he has indicated that he might. I would welcome him back, of course, but honestly I'm not sure his being back here would be in his family's best interests.

I do wish him well and hope he keeps his priorities straight. I don't want to ever see this site put anyone into a straight jacket.

Late to the party, but I believe the question has been answered...
Robert shut off the communication options when he left, so people were unable to make contact. I suspect this was due to the volume of messages he received - it was a conscientious approach, as he didn't want to leave people waiting for replies that weren't forthcoming. I suspect that he posted that message to let people know he was gone, then disabled visitor messaging along with the other contact options.

I am glad to hear that he is doing well, and that his situation is improving.
