You're right, that's not a business. That's the guy you know down the street who makes stuff for sale but once you've waited a month without hearing from him you realize its more a hobby that he does on the weekends. Since you already paid the guy and have a hard time getting a hold of him you just wait it out. When you think its time to take some action, he shows up with the item that took him 3 months when it should have been 2 days.
I don't care how good the product is, his business acumen doesn't represent it at all. If he's a one-man operation, maybe he should change that. If he's just that slow to do anything, maybe the work really isn't so great, because if you were that busy I'd try to find some help either building or manning a phone.
I keep seeing this idea that its ok to give people in this 'industry' a pass for running a piss-poor business. You wouldn't order a book from Amazon and wait 6 months for it, would you? Without communication? I understand delays with these kinds of things, but at this point every cage maker has few models they produce and there shouldn't be too many excuses on why its so difficult to produce the product unless you are Frank down the street building in his garage on the weekends and only buys material when he gets an order.
