Is it absolutely necessary to Hibernate a Russian Tort?

Hello, I'm getting a Russian Tortoise, is it absolutely necessary to hibernate them? Can I just keep him awake as long as the nutrition and lighting are really good?
Thank you!
Glenn

Not only is it not necessary, it can be dangerous if not done correctly. The only real advantage of hibernation is that it can help increase breeding behavior. If you keep the tortoise indoors, or if you can during the colder months, there's really no need to hibernate your tortoise.

I have a Hermann's, which is a pet and not a breeder. She is moved indoors in the winter, into a very large kiddie pool in the basement, filled with several inches of sand. One end has heat, light, and UV, and the other is cool and dark. She pretty much hibernates herself. She stays on the dark side, and only eats every 2 weeks or so, even though fresh greens are always available. It's a much safer alternative to forcing them into hibernation if you're not experienced with the process.

There is no express need to hibernate, Glenn/Deborah.
