I was figuring someone with more knowledge of corn snakes than I would answer, but I'll give it a shot...
Corn snakes are considered excellent beginner snakes.
Here is a care sheet from NERD. I know that there are many other good care sheets out there as well as a couple of good old-fashioned books. If you are going to buy online, I would suggest looking at Rich Zuchowski's site:

Another excellent (and commonly recommended) first snake is a Rosy Boa.

Both of these snakes can be bought rather inexpensively, both are considered easy to care for, both are typically very docile. Hopefully the links will provide you with a good start on gathering information!
