Hey guys, so my two leopard geckos are great feeders! They are little chow hounds. I was wondering how many of you feed dead crickets to your geckos? I'm going to college in August and we're allowed to have ten gallon tanks so I wanted to take them with me, but only if I can switch them over to prekilled crickets. Do any of you have success? What tips do you have for me?
I think I can probably do it with my two, since they eat from my fingers and from tongs and sometimes when I pick up the crickets I accidentally squish them and they are freshly dead when I offer them, and my geckos have no problem with it.
Do you think if they are taking dead ones with assistance they will eventually take them in their own?
ive never offered anything other than live feeders to my leos. i would assume they wouldn't want to eat pre killed because the movement triggers their feeding response. i feed dubia, superworms, and mealworms to my geckos.
No hesitation what so ever! They ate two. I heard if you up the fat content in their food during breeding season they'll eat as much as they can fit in their stomachs. My female already laid two the other day so I figured it would be worth a try.
I offer mine prekilled (Fluker's) freeze dried crickets because my mom doesn't want live crickets in the house but is okay with mealworms, which are good. I supplement the diet by offer prekilled flies (Zoomed) and live superworms.
Forgot to mention that I also offer prekilled grasshoppers (HealthyHerp) with no problems at all with him not eating. However, I would recommend (if you don't already) putting a bowl of Cal/Vit in the tank as it's hard to dust the prekilled items. Hope this helps.
