I thought the same exact thing after returning from my "hiatus", lol...seems like a LOT more people on here...why they aren't posting is the question.

I will admit, I usually stick to the "new posts" as well...and don't talk NEARLY as much as I used to.

I actually think this site is extremely easy to navigate, so I'm not sure about any revamps.

If there is anything I'd actually enjoy seeing, and this is very specific to my usage of this site, is that the BP forum was divided into 2 sub-categories...one for actual discussion, and the other for picture related threads.

I often look at threads, feel like posting and then realise I have nothing new to add, but it doesn't mean I'm not getting value from the site.

As I think Wilderness has already said, you can learn a lot from just reading around and following other conversations, you don't always have to be chipping in.

I have found that some forums are a lot more active than others, but I still think most are valid, as you get (small but perfectly formed ) sub-communities of those with specialist interests who may have more difficulty finding each other if the forums were broader.

I tend to start with my "Home" forum, i.e., that of most direct relevance to the species I keep, and then browse in the "New Posts" to see what's fresh. Also if you subscribe to a few threads that interest you, you'll get email updates when there's a new comment and that keeps it interesting.

For me this existing set up works well - but maybe if you're of the generation born with facebook, twitter etc it seems slow compared to instant messaging. Stick with it, if you make an interesting post you'll get responses in a few days or so.

Unless I missed some, I don't believe that there is ANY thread on this site on the first page of a forum that can't be reached with a maximum of two mouse clicks from the main forum page. Yes, it takes two clicks back to go to the main page, but I don't believe it is feasible to do it any other way to go from one thread in a forum to another thread in a different forum. There used to be a sort of directory drop down menu here to help make more direct jumps to one forum from another, but it was a load on the server that I would rather not have. Each and every page viewed had to load that menu selection for every user viewing a page. That provided quite a bit of extra overhead for each page sent to a browser at a viewer's PC.

Burying forums into other forums to make multiple levels of subforums will confuse the heck out of a lot of people, and quite likely most will certainly not make the effort to find them. And it will only make the problem of drilling back out to the main page even more difficult and complicated.

The choices are to have scrolling or have drilling down into multiple levels. It was, and still is, my opinion that scrolling is the lesser of those two evils.

As for changing and consolidating forums, for every 6 people who want to have less forums, there will be 6 people who want to divide out one or more forums into separate forums or subforums. Generally, my policy is that if a forum goes stagnant for a month, I fire a warning shot stating "use it or lose it". If it then remains unused, then I see no need to have it here. Yeah, I know, I've fallen down on the job of keeping abreast of that policy..

And if history is any guide here ANY change to the structure, format, or color scheme will be reacted to negatively by approximately 50 percent of the membership. And as has been typical a portion of the people unhappy with the change will leave because they don't like my "heavy handed" approach at not listening to (and obeying) their particular gripe about the change in preference to everyone else's....

Been there, done that, got a T-shirt and teeth marks on my butt....

Since my last post here, I really haven't had a huge desire to be replied to. There is so much to read and remember that I haven't really had anything to post. If I spend most of my time here reading and gathering information, I'm sure others do as well, which would account for a low post count. That's not necessarily a bad thing. There's so much information posted here already that people are still taking it in, and new members join frequently, and I'm assuming few of them have something new to contribute that hasn't already been said.

All in all, I really like this forum... Once you get past the shell.
