Pesty critters and field collecting

I was wondering if any of you field collectors has ever backed off of an area due to :
flys
mosquitoes
nats
ticks
chiggers
wasps
bees
anything else
while field collecting or waiting to
My past experiences :
In Sarita Beach Texas> I had so many accumulating seed ticks that I had to leave.
Of the Glades of Missouri> ticks and chiggers galore made me cut an area short.

Big Bend at a rest stop waiting to night cruise > flys and wasp so bad that we had to drive before time to hunt to keep both away from us.

Kansas Flint Hills > dry year and it was getting so that every good rock that was lifted contained wasp nest and 3 of us sustained multiple wasp stings. Had to give up on a very promising area.

Langtry Texas of the canyon just next and east to the town and preparing to walk the canyon as the sun was going down with hoards of mosquitoes coming in to attack. Had to leave !

Unfortunatly that is just part of it. There is a good bug repelant that is 100% deet. I forgot the name of it, but I'm sure you can GOOGLE it. Just in case, I will find out and post it up later for you. One draw back to it is that it will eat through just about anything.

I don't use bug repellent unless absolutely necessary because of the deet. Ive noticed that when an amphibian is held by a person who used bug repellent, it writhes as if it is burning. I usually dont herp if I need bug repellent.
