"Amendment II
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
- United States Bill of Rights
The only check a nation has against a tyrannical government is an armed populace. The founders or our nation understood this (having been oppressed by the British) and formed the Continental Army, and militia, from colonials under British rule.
I have read arguments claiming the second amendment is no longer necessary because we have a powerful military that will protect us from invasion. They fail to realize that the intent of the Founders was not to provide for a citizen's rights to defend against invasion, but to defend against their own government.
As for registration of firearms, thanks to the Freedom of Information Act, anyone would be able to see what firearms, and how many, you own. This has already happened:

And as for "assault weapon" bans, almost any firearm could be an "assault weapon".
assault weapon
noun
Definition of ASSAULT WEAPON as per Merriam-Webster
: any of various automatic or semiautomatic firearms; especially : assault rifle
This could be anything from a Mauser C-96 Broom handle all the way to a Barrett M82, depending on how liberal you want to be with the definition. Either way, loose and "scary" terminology like this is purely for propaganda, such as labeling all snakes as evil and invasive while not mentioning that most cattle and all horses are not native to North America.
Well, that's enough rambling on a single post for this guy.
