Guess what I've been doing...?
Over the course of the last year & a half, I have been slowly building my miniature farm. I started with chickens, got a couple of goats and then added my dream animal (no, not the Dreamsicle--it's still on my wish list)--zebu!
My chickens (22 various ages of Buff Orpington, Easter Eggers, Ameraucana, Langshan & Blue Rock, plus 4 ready for freezer camp) are for eggs & meat.
The goats are for dairy, soap, pet & lawn services. I did break down & buy a full size dairy goat--I love goat milk! Thinking about branching out & getting into meat goats (boer) at some point.
I got the zebu (miniature) for dairy & possibly meat at some point. Have a young pair that will be bred next year, but I did buy a zebu/charloais cross that I'm raising for meat.
I want to also get back into rabbits, not just for the reptiles, but for another source of meat--used to raise new zealands in the 80's & 90's. Great source of white meat...and oh, so de-lish!
Before I get anymore animals, though, I'm looking fora minimum of 10 acres so I can spread out a little more. Right now, I have 5 tiny goats (+1 full size), the chickens, and the 3 zebu.
God has blessed my with good fortune when it comes to my animals! I still have my snakes, but havent bred the first one in a few years due to the economy--looking forward to maybe breeding some next year, but still not sure.
I found out in the course of working up my family tree that I come from a long line of farmers, so I guess it's in my blood. Nothing like fresh food, whether it's from the garden or the chickens/goats...funny to think that I've almost come full circle.
