Crested female VIRGIN with eggs? WTF?
Okay so there was a bit of a surprise last night while weighing geckos when i noticed that my VIRGIN female (produced and raised by me) had a little bit of a hard spot in her belly. As I have worked with this species for years i have learned how to feel for eggs in thier tummy and after another "feel test", it seems that not only does she have eggs in there, but they are fully (or almost fully) developed. She has spent the last 3 nights digging and burying herself in her laybox too. How in the world is this a possibility??! I cave had cases of gravid females with infertile eggs that have been bred, I have had cases of gravid female with FERTILE eggs being bred before, but NEVER this happening.
Any theories/thoughts, anyone???

You might be confusing virgin eggs with fertile eggs. Virgin females of many species, including humans, produce eggs. And think about all those chicken eggs we eat. Obviously, unless the species is parthenogenic, they won't hatch.

Yeah this happens with birds all the time and tends to really freak out first time owners haha. Now if she lays them and they hatch, that's a whole other story!

Ik this post is very old and I doubt that this was the outcome but sometimes animals, usually reptiles, can clone them selves (Parthenogenesis) The Komodo dragon at the Smithsonian Zoo in Washington D.C. did this. It is very uncommon but can happen and will always result in all female offspring.

Our leachie lays eggs each year, they are infertile, we've raised her from a baby and she has never been with a male.
My corn snake has had an infertile clutch the last two years, again never been with a male.
So this happens, somewhat uncommon but not totally unheard of. Parthenogenesis also can and does happen but that is more infrequent.
