question on weights

i have a question . i have noticed that alot of sales list the amimals weight in grams . why is this ? what i mean is when 99% of everythign else around is us measured in american units ( oz . lbs ect...) why does the herp industry use the metric system ? not critising , jsut curious :scatter:

There are 28 grams to the ounce and many of the smaller herps don't weigh an ounce when they're hatched. Also, I've never seen a scale that measured in ounces, though I must admit I have "limited" experiance with scales. My triple beam days are LONG gone.

I think they are just calibrated for grams as a universal measuring system and it is much easier to be precise in grams than it is in ounces.

yeah grams are way better alot more precise. Im metric I think its way better than the crap american measuring system... no offence to those who like it I just think that how it goes in tens is alot earier than how the american system works yeah its just better for estimations of size and what not. Oh and the fact that now all herpers work with grams and internationals do it to so it works out I guess

Digital scales are available to weigh in both ounces and/or grams (mine does both). Besides being able to get a more accurate weight on hatchlings and being a universal measurement, weighing in grams makes it easier to dose medications since all drug dosages are listed in mg/kg. Until I got my scale, having to do the conversions was a pain.

metric system is much better for the accuracy in the smaller baby animals. As things like a baby leopard gecko can carry a hefty wieght of under 5 grams! The digital scales on the market are accurate at even the tenth of a gram. These small incraments can help track the gains or losses in our animals wieght quicker.

Also the dig scales can and do measure in ounces as well!
