MAn I am having the worst shipping problems right now. I was wondering if anyone can give info on a good shipping compnay that ships in a pressurized cabin. cause I send some animals out yesterday and they arrived dead. cause "unpressurized cabin"?? I hope we can get the deal with UPS soon so I can start shipping through them. Anyone one's to put their 2 cent in on what we should do as dealers in case of animal death caused by shipping? I mean I know we have an obligation to deliever the animals, to the other party, but when it is the carrier that screwed up what can we do about it?????

Lend me your thoughts

Thanx

Hey Winston , well thats a tough one . delta dash & one other airline which for the life of me i cant remember right now will ship snakes. With delta you must be approved ( im not sure what that takes ) the other airline will ship w/o being approved shipper i spoke with them a while back on the ph and they said they do have climate controlled shipping and all but they were a lil more pricey on there costs . i will find the info i had from them and post it soon .The part you asked about the shippers fault for DOA animals is something you wouldnt be able to claim on by using a carrier that doesnt ship snakes tho as if they wont accept them and you ship and try to make a claim for the animals they will laugh at you for shipping something that you were not suppose to ship anyways. i ll dig around and try to find the info for you and post it here sometime this week .

Hey Winston. I would certainly recommend Delta Dash. I have never shipped through them. And my recent shipment received through them was a very pleasing experience. Alan is right. To ship with them, you have to be an established shipper. Which I believe entails them coming to your home or business and inspecting (possibly to see if you are what you say) what is being shipped on a regular basis. The buyer will pay a little more, but the extra money will serve them well. It is same day service. It goes out and arrives the same day. The customer picks the package up at their nearest airport. I recently had a baby Emerald Tree Boa shipped via Delta Dash to me. The box and contents were in excellent condition. Definitely the way to go.

With Delta, yes you have to be a verified shipper wince Sept 11. The way to do this is first to become "known." From what I've heard (from someone that recently did it) You have to ship at least 6 packages in a certain time frame, like 2 months. After becoming known, you must apply to become verified. You basically have to fill out an application, then let them come to your establishment (could be a house) and inspect your shipping procedures. The total process of becoming verified AFTER being known is about 2 months.

Northwest Airlines is another company that will ship animals, including venomous. I was told that they changed their rates by Paul Huang, I had ordered a snake from him and he shipped through NW. He had said that they quoted HIM around $80, but when I went to pick it up, the cost was only around $58. This was a HUGE relief for me. The same day, I had received a shipment from Mark Lucas. They were shipped Delta and cost me $54. The funny thing is, the package from Mark weighed about 10 lbs MORE than the package from Paul. Then again, they came from different parts of the country as well.

Oh well, just thought I'd share my experiences. Hope this helps the discussion.

American Airlines also ships.... And the prices are not too prohibitive. I was quoted something like $60 to ship 2 adult boas.

Also just wanted to let people know I lost 2 baby short-tail possum to shippiing mishap (their nose were bleeding , so this lead to me suspect that they were shipped in unpressurised cabin even though it said "live animals")
I feel truly sad about it.
They were cute and friendly. I did pack them correctly with insulation and heat packs because it was going to NY.
I hjust want to let people know this business is not all about the money, but it is more about introducing people to new animals and educating people on how to take care of them I always educate the customer before purchase just incase they don't know what they are getting into, but then again soem people already knows. So in a way you can say I do select my customers, just because if you have the money I will not just sell the animal to you.

Well just want to let ya'll know that I'm sad about teh possum's death, and that I'm doing everything I can to make sure my customer is happy at the other end.

WEll that is what I wanted to share

Thanx

Winston?

What were you thinking shipping mammals anything other then Delta dash with a cert from a vet and with your USDA license number. You not only broke most state laws but federal ones. If I were you I would ask to have the post of what you did deleted, because this proof of federal laws you have broken. Remember you can only ship live mammals air cargo and propertly maked and with all thier peer work. Al I can say is DUMB DUMB DUMB
This is like telling your friends you broke into some cars and stole the stereos in front of the Police station.

You should never do this again for the sake of the animals and you A$$.

If you want to do mammals you best check all the laws. The Game and fish in you stae will give you the book for free and when you ship you need to know that states laws also to cover you a$$. I can'yt say it enough never ship mammals any other way then cargo.

I have been using UPS to ship reptiles for a while now and have had no major problems. Packages have always arrived on time and I have had no DOAs. The only problem I ever have is when a new driver comes for a pick up and says, "I can't take live animals, it is against the rules." But then I show them the rules and give them the names of who to contact regarding my account, and no more problems I am one of the last stops on their route for pick up, so the animals are not in the truck that long.
But Winston, I have to agree, shipping the mammals through them was not the best idea. Mammals HAVE to go through airlines, no questions. The only exception I know of are frozen feeders.
