I would not recommend H. taylori – even to a qualified zoo. I was the first to truly breed this species, and one of the very few to ever do so. They are a good specialist that require termites and the animals are frequently difficult to get adjusted to crickets. This is particularly problematic with the newborn juveniles that have less time and less fat reserves to hold them through the period necessary to acclimate them to crickets. Most juveniles will die.

They are all eating crickets (90%) and worms (10%). All of these species are kept dry to semi-dry and are all very hardy. The Ptenopus carpi are a bit more of a challenge to breed, but it is quite easy if you follow my recommendations. The Ptenopus are also some of the most vocal of all gecko species. I put a bit more info beside each species below. All are quite east to keep and breed. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I’ve kept and bred geckos for right at 30 years now, so I am rather objective when it comes to suggestions for people. Not to say that I’m always right, but normally I am. The top one of these would be the Chondrodactylus pair. The next would be the Pachydactylus carinatus pair. The next would be the Hemidactylus tanganicus pair.
The Ptenopus carpi are amazing animals and this pair will sale fairly soon. They are in very high demand and there are virtually none available. Moreover, the behavior, calling and appeal of the animals is undisputable. However, virtually nothing is known about them. I am currently writing an article that details my field observations with them (I’ve spent nearly one year in South Africa, Namibia and Botswana) and furthermore my breeding experiences with them. I was the first to breed P. kochi and P. carpi. I project the article will be published at some point early next year. They would be my top choice – bar none, if one could afford them. The very few people in the world who own them have unanimously agreed that they are their favorite gecko species ever kept.
P. kochi might rank as the highest choice, because they are the largest species of Ptenopus, the rarest and the easiest to keep. But, I only have a female at the moment.

Hey,
I can do the Ptenopus and Chondro’s for $1800/shipped. The guy in Italy is offering 1500 Euro (not sure currently in US$) and I normally ask around $1750/pair of Ptenopus alone. So, I’m working with you here. As for the chahoua – if you prefer to get them second, no problem, I can hold them for you. The only issues being that I usually leave for field work a few times/year and will be leaving right after Christmas for Africa and will be gone for around a month. So, getting them before Christmas would be the sure bet.
If we’re “a go” on the Ptenopus/Chondro’s let me know and we can set everything up. I think in my message below that you might have confused me offering the Ptenopus for $1250, but what I poorly stated was meant to imply that I will still offer the pair of Rhacodactylus chahoua to you for $1250 (per previous email) in light of you getting the other geckos. So, the offer will still stand on the chahoua for you on a second purchase, should you want them.
Let me know if we’re on board and I’ll send you the details/care sheets for these animals.

Ps. There is some residual information about Ptenopus carpi contained in my article that was just published on the Kalahari and Namib ground geckos of the genus Colopus. I’ve attached a copy of the journal. The article appears on page 43 and covers Colopus kochii which lives in the same sand fields with Ptenopus carpi. Hopefully, the article will prove interesting and informative for the Ptenopus (and Chondrodactylus for that matter), because I keep Ptenopus and Colopus in the same rack system and under the same parameters.

Let me start by saying that first of all, I frequently travel in and out of the USA due to obligations in Europe, Africa and the Caribbean all with respect to gecko-related work. So, I might not be able to answer your emails within a few days, and occasionally within a couple of weeks. Since the original inquiry for the geckos you wanted was initiated in September/October of last year, and then first payment sent on November 18, 2010, your communication with me was essentially absent. We had agreed to you paying off the balance of your purchase immediately after the Pomona show in January 2011. I heard and received nothing after that show. Days before the January 2011 Pomona show you inquired about the care of the geckos you were purchasing, as you were intending on purchasing the geckos (apparently with funds generated by your sales at that show) immediately thereafter. When I responded a week later, I included an article that covered the husbandry of Colopus, geckos which share the habitat with Ptenopus carpi. You then confirmed getting the care info and never sent the money. The next I heard from you was in May of this year, presumably as a precursor to anticipated funds you might generate through sales at the San Diego Reptile Super show in June 2011, to complete the purchase that you had initialized in October 2010 by stating:

So, the summary of our deal is as follows:
· I had young viable animals set aside for you to purchase as of September/October 2010. In respect of that, I did not breed those animals so that the purchaser (you) could do so himself.
· Our original agreement was for you to send the balance of your purchase in January 2011, immediately following the January 2011 Pomona, CA show. You did not.
· I fed and cared for animals during the austral season (breeding season that I accommodate here by breeding animals during the Australian/South African/South American summer = our winter) and did not breed them.
· No contact from you for another 4 months, until the message copied above (on May 21, 2011) stating you would pay the balance by mid-June. You did not.
· Next contact from you was not until August 8, 2011, some 75 days later, in which you state is it OK for you to pay the balance and have your geckos shipped = some 10 months after we first set up your purchase; 9 months after your deposit; 7 months after the agreement date for your purchase to be completed.
Summary of issues:
· Industry standard for live commodities (they do not live forever) of deposit being lost if the agreement is not fulfilled by the purchaser within the agreed time frame of purchase, in our case, January 2011.
· Lost breeding season (for you or I = I since I was caring for the animals and they were not paid for in full) on a pair of Ptenopus carpi and 1.2 Chondrodactylus, with the reproductive potential and financial productivity of $10,000 in a year for either of us:
1. each female Chondro produces 10 fertile eggs/year; 2 females 20 fertile eggs/year; @ $200 for each juvenile = $4000 potential/one year.
2. a single female Ptenopus carpi produces 8 eggs/year; @ $750 for each juvenile = $6000 potential/one year.
· The animals you agreed to purchase almost a year ago were priced to you at very low prices due to my need for the funds at that time to help offset some travel expenses I was facing at that time. Since the deal was never finished in a reasonable timeframe, it was necessary for me to secure funds by other sources. Meaning, that today I would never sell the animals for that cheap, because a 1.1 Ptenopus carpi sells alone for $1750/pair. 1.2 Chondrodactylus sell for $250-300each, and juveniles for $200each. The geckos I offered you were at an attractive 72% of fair market value (I have receipts from other purchases of these species from other buyers at these prices) and bizarrely you never finished this “brother-in-law” deal at these prices – or at least within the agreement terms that we both agreed to.

So, today we’re both left wondering what to do. Legally, I do not owe you a dime as every other seller in my position would not refund your deposit at all, as I (and you, had you finished the purchase in January of this year) lost production from these animals this year. Now, the animals are a year older than they were when we first discussed this deal. However, I do not operate under such strict restrictions and will find a way for you to take part of your deposit and apply it towards the purchase of geckos that I have at this time today (not October 2010) and at the prices today (verifiable by paypal receipts for the same species within the last 90 days; and not 72% value prices of October 2010) – and thereby work with you. Otherwise, the deal and prices that we agreed on last year is off and finished. If you would like to apply a % of your deposit (although not legally necessary on my part) towards a purchase today, please let me know. Again, against the industry standard of losing deposits on live commodities if not paid in full by agreed date, I do not mind working with you to find a peaceful and manageable solution for you.
If, by chance, you are left with resentment over this deal and just prefer to have your deposit returned, please remember that deposits are lost and not refunded for deals that are not finished within the timeframe that you agreed upon (twice: January 2011, June 2011). If I were in your position, I would be humbly supportive of whatever the seller would do to help me in this situation. Obviously, the choice is yours.
Only choices I see possible:
1. You want a refund today – and not getting a refund and arguing about it with no legal means for doing so (waste of your time and to some degree mine).
2. You becoming frustrated and angry and just walking away and not requesting a refund (since legally not due to you). Not sure if that’s a waste of your time or not – I would think so monetarily.
3. You want to apply your deposit towards animals I have available today, and then contingent upon my willingness and your cooperation, apply a percentage (50% and/or upwards of 100%) towards the purchase of currently available animals at current prices.
Let me know what you would like to do and if you prefer to move forward with a purchase of some sort, I will send you my current list and we can go from there.

I read your email thoroughly and I don't know if you quite remember a statement you had made to me was that If I was to pay half then I have the choice of when I will be able to pay off the rest of the balance. I understand clearly from a business stand point of what you are stating but if it was me on your end I would have contacted the buyer (being me) and did a follow up. I never attended a San Diego showing at all sorry you were misinformed about that. I really want the reptiles but at the original price we agreed on. If I had an exact time line on when the balance was to be paid I would not have waited so long. I am sorry I couldn't afford to pay you in the time frame that you wanted or that I said I would try and pay you in. I don't want to argue about this or make this more difficult then this has been but I paid you $900 of my hard earned money that I don't have much of and I am trying to pay the last of this balance. I understand you frequently travel and in our may discussion you were trying to get an exact on what it was your were shipping me, I was very compliant and when I asked to pay the balance I received no follow up message from you at all. Even through all this I trust in the utmost manner that if I send you the $900 balance you would still send me the product I agreed on. What does upset me though is that as soon as I ask for a refund you reply almost immediately. I just want what I asked for and I will gladly pay you the balance in a 2 weeks time frame of $900. Thank you.

If necessary, I can go back through our emails and pick and choose all of the relevant info to prove that we had discussed wrapping up this deal in January, which coincided with your Pomona show sales and my return from Africa in January.
A courtesy follow up on my part would have been a “where’s the money”. Nothing more.
Whereas a courtesy follow up on your part would/could have been “sorry, but I’m not in a position for the next several months (or 281 days) to finish the deal”.
As for the $900 – it’s certainly a chunk of change for anyone, you included. This is exactly why I’m not blowing you off and telling you “sorry you’ve lost your deposit”. I know how I’d feel in your position and that’s why I’m willing to work with you. I also know of many people in the last 30 years who have lost deposits every bit as large as yours for not completing a deal within the agreed time frame.
Erratic communication can lead to breakdown. It can also lead to someone such as myself, who deals with voluminous amounts of inquiries and deals, to simply ask that the other ask someone such as yourself if they know where they stand in relation to our deal, while considering fair and honest business practices and legal parameters for both of us. It also gives me the chance to see if they can recall the terms of our deal without my need of having to do so. I have no intention of just keeping your $900, or rather keeping it without giving you credit, even though the lost production out of both species has cost me far more than that. I do have copies of articles that I (and others) have authored on the subject of reproduction with Ptenopus carpi and Chondrodactylus angulifer to substantiate the average production rates and the loss values that I have shared with you. I also have many receipts from the sale of juvenile and adult Chondrodactylus angulifer and Ptenopus carpi to substantiate fair market values.
The exact time line for final payment would be:

Which would be the mid-late part of January 2011, as it’s not standard business practice to ship someone animals until paid in full. As you state, “I wouldn’t mind waiting until after you get back (mid-late January 2011) to receive them”. I had someone in Italy fully prepared to pay for the animals in full and in advance and at a far higher price, but I opted to sell them to you and thereby dodge the need of shipping the geckos internationally and risking any possible shipping issues.
You’re “upset” that I reply today to your message which infers, almost off-handedly, that you might want a refund? What if I were to wait 75 days, or 7 months, or 281 days to get back with you? Or, perhaps just hold the animals for 75 days or 7 months after you paid for them in full?
The reality is that I made special prices for you based on your decision to purchase 3 species: 1.1 Ptenopus carpi, 1.1 Chondrodactylus angulifer (not 1.2) and 1.1 Rhacodactylus chahoua. I lowered the prices on the animals based on your word that you were interested in all 3 species. After you got a better price for this, you backed out of the chahoua in hopes of getting the carpi and Chondro’s for the same price. Naturally, a lot of businesses offer discount on bulk purchases. However, you backed out of the chahoua and I still offered the animals at the reduced “bulk rate” price. Furthermore, when the deal was originally set, the $1800 ($1750 = 1.1 Ptenopus carpi $1250 + 1.1 Chondro $500 + shipping) encompassed 1.1 Ptenopus carpi and 1.1 (NOT 1.2!) Chondrodactylus angulifer:

???? Why should I believe that this time after already being duped multiple times over the last 281 days?

As I read through our messages I clearly understand in both of our defenses. I also understand it has been almost a year that I have paid off this balance, but in all honesty it is hard to just come up with $900 on the spot like I have been trying to do. I noticed that you keep stating prices and receipts for lost production but how could you count them when my deposit placed them off the market. Like a couple having a marriage date set a year from now. Lol he is still off the market. I could honestly understand if I said I would pay you a deposit and you have been holding them for a year for me then I deserved to get beat up for that, but I did pay you with the intentions of paying the $900 balance. If you don't think I ever appreciated the price you have given on the account of these species, I truly am. Nobody ever knows a persons true story and just assume the worst, for example me stating that you messaged back as soon as I thought of refunds when you are a pretty busy person and the same goes for me in not being to pay you the balance right away, because every time I was ready to pay you something way bigger came up. I am sorry for that. I also in my defense assumed I still had time to pay you. Since there being that much of a deposit I would suspect as a business man you would tell me when our contract so to speak is canceled then I can understand but you didn't even send me a warning. I had a guy put a deposit down on some geckos I had and his was a 30 day deposit non refundable stated to him and posted on my website, a week before 30 I messaged him, a couple days before I messaged all the way up to two weeks after the initial 30 days and it was around a $20 deposit. What I am stating is even though it was on his part to pay the balance it was on my part as a business and reptile breeder to have the integrity and my duty to give him his warnings not to say you don't have any. I am just stating. Just so you know every single day from the day we have began our first conversation I have thought of these new species. I see the pictures you sent me every day. It has been hard going to school being a military vet and not having the best of job. I swear it if you just let me get exactly what we originally agreed on I will get the $900 remaining balance for the Ptenopus Capri red eye 1.1 Chondrodactylus angulifer 1.1 before the end of this month is out. I promise. This month being August 2011.
