Substrate in melamine enclosure?

Should I put something in between the melamine surface and the substrate (if I plan on getting the substrate moist) ? I am planning on using a coconut fiber and potting soil mixture for bearded dragons.

Melamine will usually only absorb moisture in cracks, where seams meet and unfinished ends. Silicone caulking goes a long way.

Do you think a "mud" type substrate could discolor the wood? I'd rather it stay white if I decide to change substrate or empty it in the future

Not sure if it would stain or not. You could always put some contact paper on there just to be 100% sure, then peel it back off when you want to go back to white.
