That's absolutely absurd, the animal pictured isn't even remotely close to a rainbow boa.

It looks like a mutt BCI... Boa constrictor imperator are the most common subspecies in captivity in the US but long term captive bloodlines aren't always subspecifically pure... Given an unknown animal there's a pretty good chance it's got some mixed subspecies someplace in it's lineage but there's no way to know for certain without collection data and/or a verifiable family tree.

Phenotypically I'd lean towards BCI or BCI mutt though, it doesn't bear any particular resemblance to any of the rarer (in captivity) subspecies really. Where'd you get it and what was it called by it's previous owner?

Definately not a rainbow boa of any sort. It looks like either a Nicaraguan or just a dark colombian. Nice boa though, I like the dark ones.

Gee Matt, it's really not my fault that you don't know what a rainbow boa looks like. Maybe you should get pissed off at YOURSELF for airing your ignorance in public the way you did.

Ramona, "Red Tail" can mean a lot of different things depending on who you talk to... It was originally the common name for a few subspecies of Boa constrictor which have fairly obvious red tails. Some of the subspecies don't have the intense red coloration as adults but have it as neonates (Like BCI which are the most common in the pet trade). So a lot of pet stores will slap the "red tail" label on any Boa constrictor subspecies they happen to be selling because it sounds better than "common boa" and it's gotten to the point where it's kind of stuck. Just the common boas sold as red tails get a lot browner and darker as they age.

So in one sense it is a red tail, since the common name has now been popularly applied to the entire species... In another, it'll get hardcore boa breeders/hobbiests/fanatics up in arms and might generate angry responses from people who are firm about the value of subspecific purity (Gregg Maxwell's website has a page about the validity of locale specific designations which translates over to Boa constrictors in captivity quite nicely).
