Question Timor Monitor Substrate Help

Should I use top soil or fresh-cut wood chips (hardwood) for a timor monitor substrate? Thanks!

That would depend on what kind of orientation your cage is. Is it set up as an arboreal cage (with hides above ground), or is it more terrestrial? If arboreal, then the substrate you use won't really matter to them as they will probably spend most of their time in the hides high up in the cage. I'd go with cypress mulch in that case, as it helps to maintain humidity levels.
But if it's terrestrial, then I'd go with a soil mix that would allow them to dig their own burrows. Cypress mulch would also work in a pinch for this set-up.

Alright, I'm getting one from a trade from a guy on this site. What would a minimal length of cage for a 16" timor be? I'm familiar with savs but not so much these guys

If you're going with a terrestrial type cage, I would go with a minimum of 4 ft long x 18" deep x 18" high for a single Timor. They will utilize any and all space you give them. I personally built my own arboreal cage that was 6' high x 30" wide x 18" deep, and my pair were all over the place in it. The more room you can give them, the better.

I'm going to try and keep it in a 55 gallon tub(not aquarium) until I can build or buy a cage
