Question About Water Mocassins and Cottonmouths

Isn't it true that the Water Mocassin are confused with the Cottonmouths. Is there such thing as a Water Mocassin and if so, is it poisonous.

Thanks,
Cassandra

herpetological
cottonmouth question

Both are common names for the same venomous species/ssp. Depends on the area of the country.

There are three different subspecies of cottonmouths.
The ones that you would find in Texas are western cottonmouths (Agkistrodon piscivorous leucostoma).

but is a Water Moccasin a subspecies of Cottonmouth or is it a name used for all Cottonmouths?

Thanks,
Cassandra

The names are interchangeable. It depends on where you are (usually, some people use both) as to what the snake is called. Water Mocassin = Cottonmouth, and Cottonmouth = Water Mocassin. Same snake, two names, it covers the entire family of this particular snake, sub-species and all.
