Releasing NATIVE species

I know that you shoud never let go unnative species but I have an idea. If i were to let go in my wooded backyard species that use to be native such as Garter snakes or american toads, would this be frowned upon?
I think that it might be good for the ecosystem. The back of my backyard is heavily wooded and I'd be sure to put hiding places down such as as fence panels put together. Also, are checkered garter snakes able to survive in southern NY (Long island)?

The only concern I would have is that snakes that have been in captivity for a long time, or were born or hatched in captivity, could possibly harbor some pathogen or pathogens that are harmful to it's counterparts in the wild.

I would also suggest looking into any laws regarding the release of native species. Check with DEC (you can look on the website - www.dec.ny.gov - but that sort of thing isn't always easy to find).

Also...be aware that that what you are considering is a highly controversial topic.

Its not only that releasing a long term captive, which may be harboring nonnative diseases, is potentially harmful to the environment, but the opposite may also be true. A CB or LTC may not have the ability to survive in the wild any longer and may die when released.
