Two possibilities come to mind. First is temperature. Beardeds like it hot and if it's cool, they don't do much at all. I always provided my adults with a basking spot around 110°F/43.3°C.

The second thought is it that it may be trying to brumate. I had a female that would head off to a corner of the cage in mid August and would remain there for 6 weeks. The corner was dark and behind a large stump. The cage was huge and that was the coolest corner, being around 65-70° (18.3-21°C). A male would usually follow suit sometime in early September.
It did no good for me to get them out of hiding, they just went right back without eating as soon as I left the room.
A few weeks later though, they'd be out one day just like nothing happened.
Other adults I've had were active year round, but the behavior you describe reminds me of those two in particular that started brumating on their own when outside temperatures were still in the 80s.
