NEED HELP! RE light and D3

So I just rescued these three mali uros and they came with "uromastyx dust" and I noticed it had D3 in it. what lights should I use so they don't get to much or is this an issue at all? thanks

Adrian,

While I will admit I'm far from an expert on Uros, the use of lights, no matter what kind, are not going to prevent them from getting too much of a supplement. I can tell you that Uros should have UV lighting, regardless.

Hopefully someone with more Uro experience can give you some more specifics as far as proper calcium/D3 supplementation.

I suggest one of the mercury-vapor bulbs commonly available thr most herp supply sources.

The Power-Sun by Zoomed is what we use for our uros.

If you use a Mercury Vapor bulb, then you do not need to worry about providing D3 as their bodies can produce D3 on their own under these lamps. I prefer the Megaray or the T Rex Active UV, and have used the Sun Glo, but have heard of bad experiences with the Power Sun. I have heard of a high premature burnout rate and one case of Radiation poisoning in a beardie from a defective bulb. The Sun Glos burnout quicker than the Megarays and T Rex, but I have one that has lasted several months.

If you use any other type lighting, including florescent UVB tubes, you need to provide D3.

If your uro gets lots of natural, unfiltered sunlight, then you do not need D3.

Mercury vapor bulbs are highly recommended for uromastyx. However, I've had my uro on regular uvb and separate basking for about a year. And since last year I've used Desert 50 bulbs by Zilla. I like them. You can try these if you don't want to buy mercury vapors. So its either basking with uvb or a mercury vapor (which has both).
