The Gerbilettes

I have two gerbils, and just fixed up a 20 gallon aquarium so I would not forever be sweeping up bedding they so enthusiastically love kicking around.
They LOVE it. I have half corncob and half blue Carefresh.

I have some questions though:

They had so much fun kicking and burrowing substrate that by the time I saw them this morning they had completely covered their food dish. Can they locate food by smell even if it is covered?

Gerbils are supposedly community critters. I have 2 and am happy with that. Do you think they are happy with just each other? The 20 is fine for them but more gerbils would get it crowded.

They can locate food amazingly well by smell! (I'm the one who said to give them a cricket). We totally gave up an structure and just let the gerbils shred and decorate themselves. Each day the kids give them a new cardboard or paper item to shred, then at the end of a couple weeks we dump it out and start again. The tank is nearly full to the top by then, with tunnels everywhere. It's a great way to recycle! A whole roll of toilet paper can fill 20 gallons and keep them busy for days. We have 2 males who were raised together and never shown any aggression in 4 years. Pretty old for rodents.
