Help with amphibian fungus troubles
Has anyone had experience and/or success treating frogs for chytrid fungus with Rooibos tea, or some other treatment?
This was a suggested step from a veterinarian, along with other treatments which I will begin tomorrow. I will also be bringing in the two frogs for a skin swab and test tomorrow. The details are as follows:
I purchased four Malaysian leaf frogs last summer, and although I do keep a number of sensitive amphibians, have not had much luck with these. I have lost two since July, with no obvious clues to cause of death, and a third seems to be showing similar symptoms now. The frog has been in the water section of his half and half 60 gallon tank for the past 72 hours, while his cage mate is still on land. In my recent experience, once the frogs stay within the water section, they are dead within a week.
I took this third animal to the vet yesterday, who suggested, after having a discussion with some colleagues online, that it might be the dreaded chytrid fungus that is desimating amphibians across the world.
If anyone has any suggestions as to what to do, it would be much appreciated. I do not want to isolate either frog, as I don't want to contaminate any of my other tanks with the fungus.
Thank you,
Iain Macpherson
