CREDIT REPORT BUREAU INFO

This probably should have gone into another forum, but I placed it here as this one is the busiest one on this site. Just wanted to let people know what has been passed on to me in regards to credit report information with the 3 major bureaus that handle such stuff. here's the info i got in relation to it....

Just wanted to let everyone know who hasn'already heard, the four major credit bureaus in the US will be allowed, starting July 1, to release your credit info, mailing addresses, phone numbers, etc., to anyone who requests it. If you would like to 'opt out' of this release of your info, you can call 1-888-567-8688.
It only takes a couple of minutes to do, and you can take care of anyone else in the household while making only one call, you'll just need to know their social ecurity number. Once the message starts you'll want option #2 and then option #3 - Be sure to listen closely, the first option is only for a two year period. Make sure you wait until they prompt for the third option which opts you out forever. I received their paperwork in the mail confirming my 'opting out'' within less than one week of making the call. PASS THIS MESSAGE ON TO ALL IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK AND YOUR PERSONAL FRIENDS who aren't
even on a pc........

I just called the 800 number and the recording said that the e-mail is incorrect. The optout option only refers to financial institutions only. It is against the law for the credit bureas to give the info to individuals.

So who is sitting on this 888 number collecting everyone's social security number? Is this a government agency, a private company, or a scam artist planning on "stealing" (can you steal what is freely given? <img src="http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'> ) this information to open new accounts? I would be wary of giving out this information to someone over the phone based on a "panic" email.

The phone number is legit, the email is not. The phone number is for opting out of pre-approved credit offers. The FTC has posted a consumer alert regarding this email on their website. For a brief synopsis of the issue, see my post at redtailboa.net.
