Rain Frog questions

I'm about to buy some Rain frogs (Breviceps Mossambicus) and was wondering:
- will play sand keeping the bottom layer wet work as a substrate for them?
-any other tips on caring for these?
any help is appreciated.

Hello!

I just purchased one about 2 months ago and it is almost impossible to find care on them. I'll just ramble on here for a bit as to my set up and care....

I am keeping him in a planted 12xx12x12 exo terra with some cork and a half log 5-6 inches deep. I first started him out on a mix of sand and eco-earth (with no drainage layer) and quickly found that the substrate became overly wet. Also it seemed to stick all over him. I changed it out to an eco earth/sphagnum moss mix and that seems to be working very well (and less stuck all over him).

He comes out most nights to every few days (that I see him-as he is sneaky). When I catch him out in the mornings, I scoop him to a feeding box, where he is a ravenous eater. He has not turned down any food so far. And I'm almost positive that he does not understand being "full".

Unsure about what temps they should be at, I have heard a wide range, most agree on mid to upper 70s though. I have a small UVB and mini halogen 25w. The warmest his tank gets is about 82 (infra-red reading on highest log under light) with 72-75 on ground level and hides.

He also has a small water bowl, which I have caught him sitting in every now and then. I have caught him up on top of the cork logs and seems to use some "vertical" space (low slopping for ease of waddling)

If you or anyone else can contribute to their care, it would be great! I'd love to hear how you have yours set up and how they are doing.

Breeding in captivity

maybe has to do with heavy rainfall we need to mimic?
pH of the water/rain?
perhaps they need small puddles of water?
or even the starvation/mass eating
or temperature

Mine have only burrowed slightly so far, about an inch into the substrate
at night they come out
i've tried feeding so far missed strikes from the lighter colored one, looks skinny but healthy

I like that the one has a different texture and yellow color. Also glad to hear you are using a similar substrate mix.

I keep UVA/UVB on all my herps, (various geckos and pygmy chameleons). Im using a mini UVB bulb on this tank, which I assume doesn't have too much output. They probably do not need much though, being burried most of the time.

They are certainly not the most accurate of hunters. The crickets find the safest place in the feeding box is to hide under him.
