i don't think he's unhealthy, i'm just curious as to what it was. i'm pretty new to the monitor scene. it seems to be working it's way to it's top jaw, almost up to it's eyes

Terrible pics; they don't help ous one bit.
If the white area is pure solid white, it may be a scar from a burn or something. If it's a normal light color that looks "almost" white, then I would say it is normal. Those pics make it look like there is a very sharp adge between the light and dark area. I would guess the light is normal and the dark is discolored from some old dead skin that dried up and turned blackish in color.
Here's nicely colored sav neck/jaw. This photo is from proexotics.com where this book is sold. Get it, it's a MUST HAVE for sav owners!

when i got him he was rather dark. now there's just a white splotch on his "chin" area. his pattern hasn't gone away, it's very light colored, almost white. it's almost like his entire body is peeling. i have another sav about 14 inches and he's MUCH lighter than my baby. so i assumed it was some sort of full body shed as they age. but i just wanted to make sure it was something normal.

With proper husbandry, it'll recover. With monitors, stuck sheds are not just a simple humidity issue as with snakes and other lizards. When monitors have shed problems, the cause is usually inadaquate husbandry.
I highly recommend that book, it's really the best book on the market when it comes to monitor husbandry.

Without a doubt, a sand & top soil mixture is the best and most widely used by monitor keepers. Keep is slightly damp too.
They are not arboreal, but they do climb and love elevated areas.
