New to breeding

So im new to breeding and have two leopard geckos i want to breed. I put the male with the female.. everything was going well. He did his tail rattle and she stood still. Then, he went to go towards her and she snapped at him, causing them to both bite at eachother. He grabbed onto her tail and she continued to try to bite him. I separated them as soon as he let go of her tail. I was wondering, is this normal? Are they being too violent? Could it be because i put the male in her tank instead of him in her tank? Any advice is much appreciated.
