It would be pretty easy to verify the story one way or the other with a good quality photo of the snake's eye sockets. I did have a snake that kind of 'lost' an eye in a shed. She came in with the eye massively infected and what was left of it came off with her skin. She also died a month later because the eye was a symptom of a systemic internal infection. (we tried antibiotics, too little too late. she wasn't acting sick and we thought the eye was the end of it). The loss of the eye left a noticeable scar. It wasn't gruesome or anything, but you could tell there was supposed to be an eye there. I also have a brazillian rainbow boa who was born one eyed. There's an indent where the eye should be but there's no scar, just regular scales over the spot. So if someone had actually tugged this snake's eyes out of it's sockets, you'd definately be able to tell.
