Bearded dragon tail rot

It started happening about 4 days ago. She is caged by herself no tail nips but her tail has started to rot away. What do I do and should I bring her to a vet immediatley or will it go away with the proper care. I am using neosporin on it and betadine. She has already lost about a half in. What should I do?

Hi Jrod.....it looks like some type of trauma, did she maybe get it stuck under the stacked wood pieces ? Sometimes retained shed will cause reduced circulation of blood. Those are just scenarios since you mentioned that she has no cagemate to inflict a possible bite. You should see a vet for it, especially if it looks reddish or looks like it's spreading up the tail.....try to find one that sees reptiles. For now, applying neosporin could help , you could also use raw [ unpasteurized] honey, which is a natural anti-bacterial and anti-biotic. Be SURE not to leave loose crickets in the cage, they will feed on any wound, especially at night while the dragon sleeps. I hope you can get it taken care of, and I hope for the best for your beardie !

I feed Dubia's no crickets so I am safe there. Those pieces of wood are not in the cage that is on top allthat is in the cage is a piece of manzanita and a cave. It must be from retained shed then . Thank you for the advice Angie, I will be calling a vet tomorrow I will try the honey as well

Your'e welcome. Most tail trauma just heals on it's own, but if you want to be sure, it's good to be seen by a reliable herp vet. I hope it heals quickly for her!

I had a similar thing happen to my sons bearded dragon. The tail had an open wound suddenly appear and we put Neosporin on it, but it started to spread. We took him to the vet who gave us Silver Sulfadiazine cream which got it under control. Seems it was some sort of bacterial infection in our case.
