INDIANAPOLIS (Reuters) – A man remains in critical condition after repeatedly stabbing himself in the throat when police arrived to take him into custody in connection with a Kentucky rape, authorities said on Saturday.
When police arrived at 24-year-old Brandon McManomy's home 10 miles west of Evansville in Posey County on Thursday to serve him with a warrant for a felony rape charge, he fought officers and stabbed himself in the throat with a four-inch-long knife repeatedly, police said.
Police used a taser stun gun on him twice but one officer received a gash across the face from the knife as police subdued him, Sergeant Todd Ringle of the Indiana State Police said.
After the scuffle, Deputy Dan Montgomery received about 30 stitches in his jaw and was discharged late Thursday from the hospital.
No charges have yet been filed in addition to the felony rape charges, but "McManomy battered a police officer and resisted arrest and will likely face additional charges," Ringle said.
"If the officers had not used the taser most likely the suspect would have stabbed himself until he became unconscious and I believe that it probably saved his life," Ringle said.
McManomy faces charges including rape, kidnapping, attempted assault and violating an order of probation stemming from an August attack on a Murray, Kentucky, woman.
The suspect has an arrest record that includes attempted theft. In 2006, he was arrested for dragging an officer with his car during a traffic stop, Ringle said.
