Question My new Brazillan Rainbow Boa... and a problem

I got a Rainbow Boa no less than 12 hours ago and I noticed something in these 12 hours.
He has been stargazing on and off during the day.
Everything else about him is okay that I can see. His grip is great he has great control over his muscles.

I am very worried about the star gazing though as I am aware that is a sign of IBD. The person I bought him from said he was a perfectly healthy snake.

I guess my main question is... Should I take him to the vet for this or is there something I can do to try to get him to stop?

Without seeing exactly what the snake is doing, and to what extent, we really can't give you much in the way of suggestions. Sometimes snakes will assume a "stargazing" position for innocuous reasons, so it isn't necessarily a cause for concern.
Double, or triple, check everything; then observe. If you feel that your snake is exhibiting abnormal behavior, your best option is a trip to a herp vet.

Looking up, even for prolonged periods does not necessarily equal star gazing. While doing this, does the snake tremor? Does it seem unbalanced? When you move around the enclosure while the snake is in this mode, does it appear to be aware of your presence?

If you answered yes to the first two and no to the last, then you MIGHT have a star gazing situation on your hands. Otherwise your snake is just wierd like a few of mine are. LOL

I'm with Rich on this one.

I've found younger boas have a tendency to just stare up at the top of the cage for periods of time just because. It is probably just observant behavior and little else. A little tap on the plexi or glass normally gets their attention and they either move towards you or stop what they are doing.

Unless it is having tremors, flopping around or appearing like it is "drunk", I doubt you have anything to worry about.

If you want, you can take the snake and flip it over on its back, if it rights itself easily, it's fine. If all else fails, you can take it to the vet. if you feel it is necessary.

I agree, better not to overreact. *That said*, until you clear up your concerns, practice strict (handle last, disinfect with bleach solution) quarantine between this and any other snakes in the house. Please keep us posted!
