A MAN cornered in a shop is accused of threatening police with a 5ft iguana he was carrying on his shoulder.
Chris Carrington, 34, is said to have told officers he would use the reptile's tail and razor-sharp claws on them if they did not back off. The stand-off only ended when police used CS gas spray and batons to wrestle him to the ground.
An officer familiar with reptiles grabbed the iguana and handed it to the RSPCA.
A police spokeswoman said: "Carrington became very aggressive and threatened officers with the iguana.
"After a violent struggle he was finally overcome with tactical equipment."
Stunned officers chased Carrington into the off-licence after he escaped through the back door of his home with the pet iguana. They had been called by the man's mother who had reported him for smashing up his bedroom.
Carrington, of Bishop's Stortford, Herts, was arrested and charged with intentional harassment, threats to kill, possessing a controlled drug and criminal damage.
He appeared before Hertford magistrates yesterday when the case was adjourned.
