move to FL

We moved to sunny Florida 2 1/2 years ago from Philly (brrr). It is a great place for kids and herps. There are plenty of underdeveloped places left in the state. Even in St Lucie County, where I am, there are areas where you could potentially buy a whole block. The bad part about this area? Pay wages suck. That's the big one. Then there's the $100 per car that you register, on top of the regular registration costs. But there's no car inspection or emissions. And no state income tax. But the school system here is the pits, and as far as I know is the same throughout the state. So I guess it's definitely a checks and balances around here.

One correction to an earlier post in this thread, I know someone who got busted for hots without a license. His store was shut down on the spot. At least in this area, fish & wildlife are on top of everything! (Even their fishing laws.) So beware, if you move to the area and plan on getting hots, make sure your licensed.

Good luck!

If you're looking for large areas of undeveloped land in Florida try to look inland. The coastal areas have been heavily developed for the tourist traps. I live on the central west coast and the cold snap right now is in the low 30's at night but mid 60's during the day. The cold weather doesn't stay long and usually happens every other year. I've been here 9 years and was from Massachusetts. It's hard to believe what is allowed in Florida. I have a Exotic Permit with Fish and Game for Parrots and have only run into them once at a bird show and all they wanted was to make sure all the vendors were licensed. There are large tracts of land still undeveloped in many areas of Florida but if you need outside employment you may have to make that an important part of your location search since many areas only offer jobs in the service industries and the pay isn't always very high or may be seasonal.

South Carolina

Pets= don't really know what you are allowed or not allowed to keep. Don't really care. What I do in the privacy of my own home is my business.

Guns=Paper work. Some fees. And a one day class is all you will need to be able to carry concealed. Being able to excercise my second ammendment rights is very important to me.

Maryland

Pets= don't really know what you are allowed or not allowed to keep. Don't really care. What I do in the privacy of my own home is my business.

Guns= Forget about it in this State that fears its own people. Forget about it in this state that does not trust its own people. Forget about it in this state where the government controls its own people.....instead of the people controlling its own government.

Arizona

Pets= More laxed than south carolina dn Maryland. But I still don't care. Because my pets are my pets.

Guns= As long as you are not a felon. You can carry. you can carry on your car. You can carry on your body. YOU CAN CARRY.

But do not carry concealed. The only time you can carry concealed is if you have a permit to carry concealed. Other wise if you choose to carry you have to carry out in the open. Like the cowboys did. I love this state. Coming back here in 2005...hopefully sooner.

Texas
Pets=Don't really know, don't really care.
Guns= laxed. But not as laxed as AZ. But they do have provisions for carrying concealed.

Florida
Pets= From what I hear.....very laxed. (but don't ask me......never lived there)
Guns= Don't know.... But I do know they have provisions to carry concealed.

your best bet are Florida, Texas, Arizona.
Go to Colorado for your automatic firearms.....I know I will

nothing is private

Hi ritchie, thanks for responding to my thread. I must say, I like your attitude about your pets. Unfortunatly that attitude doesnt always work in your favor. If you have the time, I will tell you about the horror me and my family are going through right now.
I am living in vermont which I am sure you can imagine is very back woods. People who own exotics are basically considered freaks. I have a huge passion for exotics, especially reptiles. I have several snakes and monitors and have gotten alot of grief over them from most everyone(neighbors threaten to burn my home etc.)
I am an intellegent individual and know to check my state laws before buying exotics. aprox. 2 years ago I purchased a 4' american alligator. he was wonderful and I enjoyed him alot. A Vermont fish and game officer came to my house and asked me if I owned an alligator.I said yes, he then tried to convince me that they are illigal in this state quoting a law about indiginous animals. As we all know, gators dont live in vermont. he took the gator, I contacted his department constantly for 3 days. they then brought the gator back and told me I had to take it out of state. there was not a single document exchanged on this case.
I figured it was back tracking on their part and they made a mistake, just the same,I parted with my gator. This past summer I purchased two babies that were extremely tame. Late one afternoon this fall I was raided by fish and game on a warrent they obtained becouse someone called in a report that I was soliciting puppies to feed my gators(keep in mind these were 02' babies). The law they are trying to use this time is that I imported wild animals without a permit. I think we all know that a farm raised gator is NOT a wild animal. I bought them in this state so I didnt even import them.
I hired a really good lawyer, he has checked all the laws and there is NO law that saws you cant own any sort of crocadilian. Of course when Fish and Wildlife found out we were fighting it, they destroyed my baby gators. we are fighting this case, It has been long and expensive but the state is in the wrong. this is going to result in a big ugly lawsuit. The local newspapers are totally taking the states side and making me out to be an idiot.
So in conclusion, It is great to stand up for your rights, If you dont, noone will but the bottom line is- As wonderful of a country as this is, it isnt entirely free. the federal, state and local government does what it wants regardless of the laws. Its truely sad that a animal lover who was doing something good for the world is so badly defamed and made out to be scum. The sad thing is, no amount of court hearings or dollars spent will bring back the lives of those poor baby gators. We hobbiests offer a new lease on life for animals that were destined for the skin shop or dinner table.
Sorry this is soo long, I really hope people take the time to read this and I thank all that read this. sincerely corey kingsbury
P.S. Please tell everyone you know about this, direct people to this post and help tell my story.

Ritchie,

I used to live in Las Vegas ( about 5 years ago or so). Believe it or not, you can carry openly in Nevada (even in Las Vegas), but you can also carry concealed with a permit. So, it is your choice. You can pay to get the permit, or just carry openly. The only city that I know of that you could not carry openly in was North Las Vegas (which is a seperate city from Las Vegas). I lived about 2 blocks from the strip, and I carried openly every day, every where I went (except into the casino, don't recommend you try that!!...you won't make it 10 feet!!!!!!!!) You can also keep a gun in your car, as long as it is in plain sight (unless you have the CCW permit, then you can hide it).

Just thought you might be interested to know that. Later.

Richie,

I respect your attitudes towards your pets, and you are free to make the choice to keep whatever you want. However, if by some chance you are keeping animals that are against state or local regulations (sounds like you don't know) are you prepared to pay the fines and suffer the consequences if you are caught. I pretty much feel as you do, and even though I know several people who are keeping animals that are illegal (and they know it also) it doesn't bother me because they are being cared for and these people are acting responsibly with them. If they are busted however, they will get no sympathy from me (nor will you) I know that a lot of these laws suck, and are very unreasonable, but the fact is they are the laws. If you choose to ignore them don't come to me for support if you get caught. Depending on the circumstances I may be willing to lend a hand in getting such laws changed but I won't donate money for a legal defense fund or anything like that. (see note to Kat below) Of course this may not neccesarily apply to laws that are vague, rather to laws that are pretty straight foreward. No venomous, no crocodilians, no constrictors over X' long etc.

Kat

On the surface the laws seem fairly relaxed in El Paso county but they also seem pretty vague (as do most animal laws I suppose) What do they consider exotic or dangerous. Seems to me like they could be real jerks about it if they wanted to and they got the right complaints from the right people. With these types of laws it would be possible to get my support if you were busted (see response to Ritchie above) with say a leopard gecko or a corn snake. These laws are vague and open to a lot of interpretation.
