Reporting the incident CBS said the snake was believed to be a rattlesnake, one of the American continent's most venomous reptiles.
The snake victim was on one of the Cross Creek GC's fairways when he was attacked, Capt. Jackie Williams of the Riverside County Fire Department told CBS.
After initial treatment on the course, she said, the bitten man was airlifted by helicopter to a hospital , where he was in critical condition.
Rattlesnakes in the Temecula region of California are typically found in valleys and foothills during warm months, but Williams said snakebites in the area were relatively rare.
"This is only the second one I can remember," Williams said. "Usually, snakebites happen more in areas like Anza."
