Sorry about all these hoops to jump through, but I am quite serious about blocking spammers and scammers at the gate on this site and am doing the very best that I can to that effect. Trust me, I would rather be doing more interesting things with my time, and wouldn't be making this effort if I didn't think it was worthwhile.

whats better substrate for a water monitor...aspen shavings or topsoil?
i have had a water monitor now for a few days (Varanus salvator)......ive done research on them quite a bit before investing in buying one...there seems to be conflicting info on care sheets n whatknot on the substrate for a water monitor..some say aspen shavings is convenient n better suited, some say go with topsoil...i have aspen shavings in there right now but..ehh, i have to mist it daily to keep it somewhat humid at least (humidity should be around 70% i think?)...seems like topsoil would also keep the crickets from getting away, some seem to hide in the aspen, whereas aspen shavings they could hide into? no? Im thinking of moving over to topsoil? yay or nay? currently in a 30 gal tank also..everything is in place...just the substrate im not totally sure on...

I have asked this question before about which one to use. I have been told numerous times that top soil is the best. If you can find it without ANY fertilizers or additives it is the best. I have been using it for my monitor almost a year now. Its easy to keep humidity up thats for sure. I also add night crawlers to the dirt, they help keep it loose and clean, plus my monitor digs them up. I just added worms a couple days ago, but I hear it helps a lot. Anyway, I would recommend top soil, that my .02 cents. have a good one!

i have a bunch of mealworms (superworms i think theyre called)...can i add those for now? I will add worms in the near future. thanks bro

I wouldn't leave them in there. What I did was just went down to walmart and picked up a 12 count of nightcrawlers. He has already dug up a few, seems to enjoy it. They help the dirt in your garden, so they should do the same for the monitor. later
