Housing Dragons?

Some people say dragons should be housed alone. Others say together is ok. I heard Females together are ok. And not to house 2 males. Also I heard that 1 male and 2 or 3 females are ok. So my question is, What is ok and what is not ok?

We keep multiple dragons together, but there are some things that you have to keep in mind. First of all, you don't ever want to house more than one male in the same cage. Males are very territorial and will fight with each other, causing great harm or possibly even death for one or both of them. 2 or even 3 females can live happily together, provided they are of similar size. If one is bigger than the other, the bigger one will most likely try to eat the smaller one. You must make sure that the enclosure is big enough to house more than one dragon. You also need to watch them at feeding time to make sure that they are all eating and one is not getting intimidated by the other(s). One male can be housed with one or 2 females once they are full grown. However, be aware that if you do this, you will very likely end up with eggs. For that reason, you want to make sure that the dragons are old enough to properly produce eggs.

Some people will say that you should never house more than one dragon in a cage, and that is definitely the safer way to do it. However, if you follow these guidelines and pay attention to the animals to see how they are doing, you can keep multiple animals together with no trouble.

I hope that this helps. If you have more questions, please ask.

Hello

Hello William,

Juvie & Adult male bearded dragons should never ever be housed together, no exceptions to this rule. They are too aggressive & territorial. That is the most important thing to remember regarding males. If you house 2 males together, they will fight to the death & it most likely will not be very pretty.

Juvie & Adult female bearded dragons can be housed together successfully IF you do it correctly. The tank needs to be at least a 150 gallon tank so they can have their own space & own basking light area, etc. You have to watch to make sure that they are not dominating the other one by taking all of the food, & trying to take over their space. Some have housed 2 adult females successfully but again, every single dragon is different. You may house 2 that will get along, while 2 others simply will not. They are very individual & you need to be perceptive enough to realize when it just is not working & they need to be separated. Females usually are not as territorial, but sometimes they can be somewhat aggressive & dominant.

Juvie & Adult male & female bearded dragon housing is a definite NO NO. This is not a good living arrangement for either one of them. They do not need to continually mate as this would happen if they were housed together. It would quickly lead to overbreeding of the female which will leave her stressed, & possibly becoming egg bound. This will cut down on her lifespan greatly. Most breeders will not leave the male & female together for breeding purposes any longer than 1-2 days at the most. Also, keep in mind that upon introducing them that there is simply NO guarantee that they will get along well enough to successfully mate. Not all of them do. Again they are all very individual & have separate personalies. You simply cannot force them to mate if the female is not receptive towards the male, & you will cause her undue stress if you try to force the issue. The male, if not old enough can damage his hemipenes if he is not ready to mate as well.

Also keep in mind that before you ever decide to house 2 dragons together, to make sure that you always quarantine each & every dragon that you bring into your home for at least 90+ days before introducing them to another dragon in your collection. You never know what they could be carrying or could pass along to your dragon.

I hope this helps out.
