putting holes in sterilite tubs

I'm not sure i should ask this is this section so i'm sorry if that's the case. I was in the process of moving from aquariums into sterilite tubs and will be using the tops on them when in the rack. I was wondering if putting the holes in the top is as effective as putting them in the sides. I really personally don't like the look of the holes in the side but will ventilation still be good if done in the tops? Thanks for any responses.

If the rack is of standard construction, meaning a relatively snug fit, then ventilation is likely not going to be as effective on the tops as it would be on the sides, simply because there isn't as much airspace.
If you decide to drill the sides of your boxes I'd like to share this little nugget that has worked well for me in the past. To prevent the plastic from cracking when drilling, simply back up each mark with a block of wood before drilling making sure to hold it firmly against the plastic. If you don't have a piece of wood handy, then an old book will work just as well.
Best of luck with your new set ups!

Or you can burn holes using a soldering iron.

I agree, sides provide better air flow.

Yes if there isnt much room between shelves to allow air flow i would definetly put a few in the sides. This will help allow a cross wind & air will actually exchange. You can always put the holes up high so there not as noticeable. Good luck
