ORLAND PARK, Ill. A thief trying to swipe a baby Brazilian rainbow boa from an Orland Park pet store shoved the snake in his trouser pocket before leaving Chicago Reptile House, according to authorities.
About 2 p.m. on July 25, Devon Wennlund, 18, of Downers Grove, is accused of taking the month-old snake from its tank. A customer allegedly saw him stash it in his pants pocket.
The snake, about 12 inches long, was being sold for $165.
“It’s just a little thicker than a pencil,” store owner Brian Potter said.
Potter said he caught the would-be snake stealer sitting in his car. “The snake was crawling out of his pocket,” Potter said. “He gave me an ‘Oh, I’m an idiot’ apology.”
Wennlund did not return a call to comment. He faces a charge of retail theft.
