Sexing Snakes

With all the conflict going on on the BOI regarding the orange boa, it brought up a few questions.

What is the most reliable way to sex snakes?

I have heard that it is difficult to pop older snakes because of the greater muscle control that males have, and that popping can only prove a male if the Hemipenis is everted. if it isn't it could be a female or it could just be a difficult male. I was in the market for some adult female balls and I saw the guy really pusshing pretty hard to get them to pop. (harder than I would have done) A few popped and a few didn't, but even those that didn't I was sceptical.

How easy is it to poke through the membrane of a female? and is it true that there would be blood? I would think that there would be some resistance before it gave way and became easier to insert again. I will usually not probe snakes simply to determine sex unless people are looking specifically for a mate for one of their snakes. Even then I will not gaurantee it (I am not an expert and I do not have a lot of experience probing)

Also, If the ad states that the animal is of a particular sex and it turns out not to be that sex then the buyer is entitled to a full refund. the only way I would not expect it is to have in writting from the buyer that the sex of the animal was not important. Example, someone advertises a snake and says it is a male. Buyer emails and says it doesn't matter I want it because it is a nice looking snake. if it later turns out to be a female, I don't think the buyer would be entitled to a refund because he already said the sex did not matter to him.

Steve,

I'll agree with the person who referenced the Barkers (et al.) with regards to sexing, popping and age of the snakes. They are experienced breeders and biologists and they know what they are talking about. Probing is easy and very reliable once you learn to do it properly. Using adequate probes and TLC, the likelihood of hurting a snake will be minimal. If it's a large snake (even a large ball python) another person to help you immobilize the snake comes oftentimes handy to avoid sudden movements.

Best regards.

I agree. I have a guy picking me out four adult WC female balls. I know he will be trying to pop them (as I have seen him do) I guess I will have to bring my probes just to make sure.
