Unusual Garter Snake

Found this fine looking critter while out on the first herping trip of the season.
I have never seen one quite like this and was pleased to get a few pics.
As you can obviously see, it loses the normal black background and stripe towards the last 1/3rd of its body, where it turn a yellowish brown. In addition, it seems to have more of this golden brown coloration flecked throughout its body.
I'm curious to see if the color variation is common in other areas, as I have caught literally hundreds of Garters here in SW Va. and this is the first one that I have seen like this.
