1.1/1.2 Heterodon simus (Southern Hognose Snake)

I am looking for 1.1 Heterodon simus for a breeding project, even 1.2 if the price is right. I have bred H. nasicus since 2009, started breeding H. kennerlyi in 2019 and would like to add H. simus. I have kept H. nasicus since December 1995, had kept H. platyrhinos between 2000-07 and H. simus between 2001-07, and have kept H. kennerlyi since November 2017.

I would prefer WC but will consider CBB if the male is unrelated to the female(s). However, Nota Bene: As of 2019, the only-known state to legally collect from is Florida, which has been the case for years.

Thank You,

They're state-threatened in South Carolina, so I doubt collection, ownership, and sale is legal there. They've declined so steeply in numbers across their range and in Florida that I strongly suspect Florida will soon list them as state threatened too. They were actually petitioned for federal listing in 2012 and the listing was found to have merit, but everything stalled. The same thing happened with eastern diamondback rattlesnake.

Hello Vanessa, and thank You for Your input. I actually intended to update my ad when I posted my last Reply, to reflect that I became aware last year--or rather, I confirmed--that Florida is still the only state to allow collection, as I had a fellow Floridian vendor bring an unsexed specimen to the August 2019 Hamburg show. He has always lived in Florida but collects all around the country, too, and is well-versed in various states' laws and is very law-abiding.

Anyway, yeah; for ~20 years since I last researched the topic, Florida remains the only state to allow the legal capture, sale and transport over state lines of Heterodon simus. I might even have an email saved from back then, from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. They were a candidate for listing back then, too, but nothing came to be...id est, I wouldn't hold Your breath. It's both a good and a bad thing. :/
