Coronavirus patients’ pets in Hong Kong will be quarantined after dog tests positive for virus

HONG KONG – A pet dog in Hong Kong tested positive for the coronoavirus, according to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD).

AFCD made the announcement on Friday. They said the picked up the dog from a home at Tai Hang after the dog’s owner became infected with the COVID-19 virus.

The dog was sent to a facility, and oral, nasal, and rectal samples were collected for testing.

AFCD said the nasal and oral cavity samples were tested weak positive to COVID-19 virus. The dog does not have any relevant symptoms.

This is the only dog quarantined at the moment. There are no other animals using the facility.

AFCD released the following statement:

“At present, the AFCD does not have evidence that pet animals can be infected with COVID-19 virus or can be a source of infection to people. The Department will conduct close monitoring of the above dog and collect further samples for testing to confirm if the dog has really been infected with the virus or this is a result of environmental contamination of the dog’s mouth and nose. Repeated tests will be conducted for the dog and it will only be returned when the test result is negative.”

The spokesperson said that to ensure public and animal health, they are advising pets of patients be put under quarantine by the AFCD.

The pets will be delivered to designated animal-keeping facilities of the AFCD for quarantine and veterinary surveillance for 14 days. Samples will be collected for testing of COVID-19 virus as appropriate.

Officials in Washington state say a person has died of COVID-19, the first such death in the United States.

That's an interesting story -- I had not heard it before.

We are in a much better position than 100 years ago, though. We have available to us most of the information that exists: primary sources (journals online and in libraries), experts and other knowledgeable people (academics, industry insiders), live raw realtime data (weather radar feeds, public camera feeds, everyone's iPhone video on (so-called) social media), and most of us are -- or should be, anyway -- much, much more educated than people were a century ago.

If some source needs to be fact-checked, we (separately or cooperatively) have the ability to confirm any claims made. Oh, unless information is being actively suppressed; then our best tool in the kit is missing parts.

So yeah, government cannot be trusted to know everything concerning your own personal well being and safety. Trust your own instincts rather than relying on government or the mainstream media to tell you what you need to do and when you need to do it.

IMHO.

Actually, I seem to recall reading a book about that volcanic eruption many years ago. From what I can recall, there was a whole lot more to the local government aspect being the cause of many deaths on that island. Got pretty brutal toward the populace that rightfully wanted to bail out and go somewhere safer. But when looking for a reference to post here, I found that many of the pages mentioning this eruption have had this government aspect scrubbed or severely downplayed from their narrative.

That is one of the problems with history going all digital. The record can be scrubbed or altered at will as needed by whoever controls that medium.

Aye, that.

There are at least five books on the matter on Amazon; some look pretty good.

Here's the entirety of a brief but telling Amazon review of "The Day the World Ended" by Gordon Thomas:

"This is a great book. First it is based on actual events woven together from newspaper reports, letters, telegrams, and interviews. This is what living on the slope of a volcano is like and also the stupidity of the governing party who emphasis was more on the up-coming election than the survival of their voters."

Oh, here's part of another critical review:

"Such an interesting event. So boringly told. The completely unnecessary deep dive into the politics rather than more anecdotes about the people make this book boring and bogged-down"

Unnecessary, eh?

Uh oh! Two cases turned up near Tampa.

Florida’s first coronavirus cases found in Hillsborough and Manatee counties

Might be about time to go into lockdown here. If they found 2, there are certainly going to be more carrying around the virus.
